Crystals by star sign
Every sign of the zodiac has its companion stones, according to tradition.
A stone for every sign of the zodiac
Pairing stones with star signs goes back to antiquity: medieval lapidaries, and later Renaissance astrology, gradually wove a network of correspondences between gems, planets and the twelve signs. Our guide gives you, for each sign, the stones tradition associates with it — with its dates and the meaning of the association.
From Aries to Pisces
To fiery Aries (21 March – 19 April), tradition offers the stones of fire that channel its drive: red jasper, carnelian, bloodstone. To Taurus (20 April – 20 May), sign of Venus, the green and pink stones of steady love: rose quartz, emerald, malachite. To Gemini (21 May – 20 June), agate, citrine and tiger's eye for a quick mind's clarity. To Cancer (21 June – 22 July), the lunar sign par excellence, moonstone and carnelian.
To Leo (23 July – 22 August), the solar stones of radiance: citrine, amber, peridot. To Virgo (23 August – 22 September), the sodalite and amazonite of discernment. To Libra (23 September – 22 October), the aventurine and lapis lazuli of balance. To Scorpio (23 October – 21 November), the obsidian and garnet of transformation. To Sagittarius (22 November – 21 December), the traveller's turquoise. To Capricorn (22 December – 19 January), the onyx and smoky quartz of endurance. To Aquarius (20 January – 18 February), the amethyst and labradorite of free intuition. To Pisces (19 February – 20 March), the aquamarine and fluorite of the dreamer.
Birthstone or zodiac stone?
Take care not to confuse two different traditions: the birthstone is tied to a calendar month (garnet for January, amethyst for February, aquamarine for March…), whereas the zodiac stone follows the astrological division, which straddles two months. The two systems coexist, sometimes overlap, and often contradict one another — they are traditions, not a science, and that imprecision is part of their history. Lapidem offers both: birthstones among the lapidary tools, zodiac stones here.
