What weighs in the hand
Which stones for grounding?
«Grounding» is a word of contemporary lithotherapy: you will not find it in older sources. It covers a simple idea, coming back down, and tradition answers it with what is heavy, dark and opaque.
Where the association comes from
From weight and colour, very directly. The stones called grounding nearly all have a high density: hematite weighs 5.2, twice a quartz of the same size, and you feel it immediately in the palm. Tradition turns that sensation into a symbol. Black and brown play their part as colours of earth. The chakra system places a dark red centre at the base of the spine, tied to material security, and the list follows. Hematite also has a real history: its name comes from the Greek haima, blood, because its powder is red, and it served as a funerary pigment from prehistory onwards.
The stones tradition offers
What tradition suggests doing
Hold it in your hand and feel the weight, feet on the floor. Some handbooks suggest a low pocket, or walking while holding it. Without knowing it, the exercise overlaps body-attention techniques that are themselves studied: bringing attention to a simple physical sensation is a known way out of a spiral of thought.
What a stone does not do
Feeling scattered or «not quite here» can come from tiredness, stress, or something treatable. Holding a heavy stone is an exercise in body attention, and as such it is useful; if the floating feeling is constant or comes with other signs, it deserves to be told to a doctor rather than to a mineral.

Frequently asked questions
Why is hematite so heavy?
Because it is an iron oxide: density 5.2 against 2.65 for quartz. At equal volume it weighs nearly twice as much, and that is the simplest test for recognising it.
Is my onyx dyed?
Very probably, and that is not a problem: agate has been dyed black since antiquity, the process is stable and irreversible. Naturally black, perfectly even onyx is rare and expensive.
Does magnetic hematite exist?
Not in nature, or negligibly. Magnetic beads sold under that name are sintered ferrous ceramics. Real hematite will not pick up a paperclip.
