Pale blues and water greens

Which stones for stress?

Here tradition leaves violet for pale blues and water greens, the colours associated with calm in nearly every culture. It is an association of tint before it is an association of mineral, and it shows in the lists.

Where the association comes from

Almost entirely from colour. The stones reputed to be calming are sky blue, milky white or water green, and red or black stones never appear. That is no accident: linking pale blue to calm is widely shared, and it predates modern lithotherapy. Added to it is the chakra system, which places a blue centre at the throat, tied to expression and so to speaking rather than brooding. The names themselves play a part: angelite has only been called that since the 1980s, and that trade name made its reputation as much as its colour did.

The stones tradition offers

What tradition suggests doing

Hold the stone in a closed hand and slow your breathing while looking at it. Handbooks talk of «discharging» into the stone; what materially happens is that you stop for two minutes with a cool, smooth object in your palm. Flat pebbles, called worry stones, exist for this and are rubbed with the thumb. The object occupies the hands, which is not nothing when agitation runs through them.

What a stone does not do

Anxiety that settles in, the kind that stops you working, sleeping or seeing people, is a health matter and it can be treated. Holding a pebble can accompany a hard moment; it replaces neither follow-up nor treatment, and nobody should drop one for the other. If the grip does not loosen, talk to a doctor or a psychologist.

The correspondences presented here belong to tradition and cultural heritage. They are in no way medical advice and never replace a consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a stone that actually works?

No stone has a demonstrated effect on anxiety. What is documented is the effect of a slow, repeated, attentive gesture, whatever the object. The stone is the support for that gesture, and that is already something.

Can several be worn together?

Tradition happily does, as a bracelet. Mind the one real risk: a lepidolite at 2.5 set against a quartz at 7 will be scratched and worn away within weeks.

Should they be cleansed in salt water?

It is the most common and the most destructive advice. Angelite crumbles, lepidolite delaminates, selenite dissolves. A dry cloth suits them all.
