Red and gold, the exact opposite of sleep

Which stones when drive is lacking?

This list mirrors the sleep list exactly: red and gold instead of violet and white, worn instead of placed, morning instead of evening. The internal coherence of tradition is very visible here, and it is entirely chromatic.

Where the association comes from

From the red of blood, the oldest of all lithotherapy correspondences. Garnet takes its name from the pomegranate seed, ruby from the Latin ruber, red, and both were worn as talismans of vigour across medieval Europe and far beyond. Old medical texts attributed an action on the blood to red stones by simple similarity of colour: this is the doctrine of signatures, according to which a plant or a stone shows its use by its appearance. It is false, it was believed for centuries, and this list comes from it. Heliodor and rutilated quartz, golden, were added in the twentieth century on the same principle, that of light.

The stones tradition offers

What tradition suggests doing

Wear it in the daytime, and rather in the morning. Handbooks advise against these stones in the evening, by symmetry with the previous ones. If you follow these practices, the only useful advice is not to look in a mineral for what decent sleep gives for free: tradition itself makes rest the condition of drive, and on that point it is right.

What a stone does not do

Tiredness that lasts is not a lack of motivation: it is a signal, and the possible causes are many and very common, from low iron to the thyroid by way of sleep apnoea and depression. All of them are diagnosed by a blood test or a conversation. If you have been exhausted for weeks, see a doctor: it is the only recommendation on this page with demonstrated effectiveness.

The correspondences presented here belong to tradition and cultural heritage. They are in no way medical advice and never replace a consultation.

Frequently asked questions

Why are red stones linked to blood?

Through the doctrine of signatures, which dominated Western medicine until the seventeenth century: a thing was believed to show its use by its appearance. Nearly all colour correspondences in lithotherapy come from there.

Is a cheap ruby a real ruby?

Often yes, but filled: lead glass poured into the fissures to make them invisible. The stone is genuine, the treatment is massive, it must be declared, and it makes the stone sensitive to acids and workshop heat.

What is the difference between heliodor and citrine?

Two unrelated species: heliodor is a beryl (like emerald), citrine is a quartz. Heliodor is harder, rarer and dearer.
